Hey there true-believers! You might have already heard. I've got a new webcomic out there, called IRON SAM, over at DC Comics' Zuda site:
(edit -- ZUDA comics has closed its doors and has gone out of business.)
Yes, it's an action-comic with a sci-fi twist set in a dystopian future. IRON SAM is about a pipe wielding robot-samurai that goes to any
lengths to accomplish his directives.
So, give it a look-see, kick the tires, and take it out for a spin. If you read it and it strikes your fancy, then feel free
to sign-in, vote for it, give it a 5-star rating, and make it one of your favorites.

The number one television comedy of the year, for me, has been COUGAR TOWN:
--> Link to Cougar Town on Hulu.com
Yes, COMMUNITY is a good show, but it's not as strong right out of the gate. Pound for pound, COUGAR TOWN and it's group of 40 somethings have enough comedic punch to knock
me out -- or at least get a couple chuckles out of me almost every episode.
Another big surprise hit for me this year was DC's THE MIGHTY:
--> Link to THE MIGHTY on Amazon.com
A Keith Champagne and Peter Tomasi joint collaboration. Probably, the best single comic trade I read this year. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the slow build
and courtesy the writers extend to the reader. They didn't feel the need to spell everything out. They let me fill-in the intentional gaps of the narrative. A+
storytelling made all the more bitter-sweet considering the series comes to a close with issue twelve.

In last month's Previews magazine (the catalog which retailers use to order comics) is the debut issue of Ressurection. A new on-going
series from Oni Press. The article's solicitation copy:
In the tradition of timeless science fiction films like The Day The Earth Stood Still and War Of The Worlds, Resurrection is the
story of an alien race come to conquer. But while those classic tales focus on the invasion, Resurrection starts when those stories end. After
years of conflict the aliens are gone and the planet is safe, or is it? Who ended the war? How did they do it? Where do we go from here? Written by
Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine) and drawn by David Dumeer, Resurrection uncovers both the secrets of humanity’s survival and its impending future.

iFanboy feaures three articulate and intelligent New Yorkers who like to talk about comics, conventions, and popular writers. I admittedly haven't listened

On a slight tangent, has anyone heard the IRON MAN movie-buzz? Robert Downey Jr. to play the

Honestly, I think that anyone who isn't Tom Cruise is a good choice and Downey DOES have
the acting chops to pull it off. I've gotta say, this movie has a chance at being pretty cool.

I saw TRUE ROMANCE this past weekend. I gotta say it surprised the heck outta
me. Written by Tarantino and directed by the same guy who gave us TOP GUN. It
was dark and graphic, but behind that was a young man's simplistic
outlook of love mixed in with a get-rich-scheme involving a suitcase
of the devil's dandruff. Compelling, touching, and entertaining. I don't think
you can ask much more from a movie than that.
I also posted a new page from my sketchbook today. Check it out:

I saw GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK this past weekend. I was really
looking forward to it. Love those period pieces.
The film was a tribute to Murrow's dry razor-sharp delivery clearing
the stage for his words. Every bit of his dialogue felt jam-packed
with cerebral-goodness.
I liked that they didn't try to milk the story. Sure, it would've
been easy to turn it into a 'MIRACLE' Hollywood-type movie. I think
if they did, it would have made Murrow into more of a martyr, instead
of an intelligent guy doing what he felt was right.

Aside from the usual hullabaloo, gearing up for the holiday season takes a considerable amount of time.

--11.05.05 Other Stuff--
Recently, the movie rights for IRON MAN have been returned to Marvel and I can't
say I'm very sad to see it go. It's no secret to the
people I talk to that IRON MAN has been a favorite of mine for years and I
would rather the general public be unaware of the existence of
Ole' Shellhead than have a mediocre Hollywood interpretation.
I had been grimacing at the notion of Tom Cruise playing the lead and curious at the prospect of
Cassavetes sitting in the director's chair. At one point in the sceenplay they had Tony Stark's father,
Howard, playing the bad guy just like they did in the HULK movie.
They also had Tony exploring his inner demons through his alcoholic tendencies which didn't exactly thrill me.
Spending 30 minutes or an hour of a super hero movie watching whomever play a drunk is not my idea of a good time. I don't think
it helped THE PUNISHER movie and it's not what I'd want to see. Yes it was interesting back in the 80s when you
didn't see stuff like that in comics, but it's not the case these days in film.
If they ever DO manage to get a good IRON MAN movie going I'd be happy as long as
they center around Tony being a tragic hero who experiences significant personal loss. I don't think it would
matter if he's some sort of military advisor for Desert Storm or fighting the Viet Kong back in the hay days of the red scare.
As for the lead role I think you could do worse than Guy Pierce to play the Ironclad Avenger.
Anyone who has seen LA CONFIDENTIAL or MEMENTO knows he's got the acting chops and I think he might be able to pull
off playing a genius. But, until IRON MAN gets picked up by another studio, I think I'll be sleeping just a little more soundly.

There are times when you have to go back to a comic that you've, more or less, dismissed and
marvel at the technical achievment of the writer/artist. In this case I'm talking about Frank
Miller's DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. The most evil man who ever worked inside comics. The Peter Frampton
of the funny book industry.
I went back to see his 16 panel grid that he uses throughout the book. Amazing.
For instance, at least on one page, I saw 16 panels with about 230 words on the page!
Talk about "more bang for the buck"? Originally printed in 4, 45 page installments, DKR
is a well executed piece of fiction. Even if the tone of the book doesn't suit you, the
skill in which it's brought to life is a remarkable achievement.
It's just my opinion, but I think his work speaks for itself. More power to you, Frank.

--07.25.05 News and Movies--
Been getting a bit of online press about the ARMAGEDDON & SON book on Comic Book Resources, Newsarama, and several other comic
related news sites. I thank them one and all.
I also saw the new Burton flick. Visually striking. Especially loved seeing Noah Taylor
and the actor that played Grampa Joe.
I have read the book and seen "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." The newer movie seems like
a Prozac version of a film made 30 years ago. Although Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors, in this
role, he reminded me more of Michael Jackson than a world famous chocolatier. I also fell asleep in the
theatre while watching, twice.
--07.08.05 Movies--
My worst and best movies I've seen lately are probably "BUBBA HOTEP" with Bruce Campbell and
"THE LIFE AQUATIC" with Bill Murray. I can't tell you how much it pains me to say I didn't
enjoy a Bruce Campbell film. I LOVE Bruce. He's the man. Not only do I enjoy his films, but I used
to idolize his portrayal of the anti-hero. Love the guy. Hate the movie. The only nice thing I can think
to say about it is that it MIGHT have made a good comic.
Now, "THE LIFE AQUATIC" is a dense foray into the surreal. A treat and joy to behold. I can't say enough good
things about it. I love the character arc "Steve", played by Bill Murray, travels. An inspired story, which is odd, because
the first time I watched this excellent piece of euphoria I couldn't even tell you I enjoyed it. After
a week I suddenly realized its brillance and looked forward to its release on DVD. I have cherished it ever since.
--07.07.05 Introducing DUMEER.com version 3.0--
That's right this is actually the third site that I've done for this domain. I used to use it to pimp my
web abilities and Flash work that I do, but I've chosen a simpler approach to communicating over the
web. HTML for better or worse, I've found, is quicker and easier for editing content. Also, these days
I try to pimp comics instead of fancy digital billboards.
That seems to be a good introductory statement for the maiden voyage of my news section of DUMEER.com
Welcome one and all.
